Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Veteran Arms, LLC?

Veteran Arms, LLC is a Georgia company dedicated to providing reenactors and historical shooters with affordable reproduction arms from the muzzleloading era. Our business offices are located in Lumpkin, GA.

Is Veteran Arms, LLC associated with any other company?

No. Veteran Arms, LLC is an independent company affiliated with no other business in the USA or abroad. Our products are manufactured by us, or imported directly from overseas manufacturers. We work closely with our suppliers to ensure that our products meet the quality and affordability requirements of our customers.

Are Veteran Arms’ muskets real firearms? Can they be fired live?

Yes. All of our muskets are fully functional and may be fired live with powder and ball. As with any muzzleloading firearm, however, care should be taken to follow the proper loading and firing procedures. Each musket is shipped with an owners manual that outlines the specifications for that musket including the recommended powder charge and ball size. All of our weapons are designed to fire black powder ONLY. Smokeless powders and blackpowder substitutes should never be used. NEVER exceed the recommended powder charge.

What size ball should I purchase?

One will find an approximate caliber and ball size for each piece on that piece’s page on this website. The given diameter/ball size is only approximate, with slight variations between pieces. We do not recommend purchasing a ball mold or ammunition until you receive your weapon. Each musket or pistol is shipped along with a specifications sheet which states the appropriate ball size for that particular musket.

Who may purchase muskets and pistols?

You must be 18 years old to purchase a musket and 21 to purchase a pistol. Veteran Arms, LLC reserves the right to contact purchasers to verify age and to refuse sale to persons unable to satisfy the age requirement.

In most cases, muskets and pistols may be shipped directly to the purchaser. A handful of states and cities place additional requirements on delivery. These include, but are not limited to: Illinois, NYC, New Jersey, DC, and others.

Veteran Arms also ships internationally to most countries. For more information, see our International Order Section.

Are locks tuned? Frizzens hardened?

We tune the locks on all of the muskets we sell. We also harden the frizzens and make sure the piece is properly vented. All of our muskets come with a limited warrantee on the lock parts and a lifetime frizzen rehardening guarantee.

Where are Veteran Arms’ products made?

Most of Veteran Arms LLC’s muskets and pistols are made in India and finished here in our shop here in the USA. Each piece is transferred upon order to our finishing department where the stocks are sanded / stained / finished, the hardware is polished, locks tuned, frizzens hardened, etc. Each piece is then hand assembled and inspected prior to shipment. In addition to our regular line, we occasionally build pieces made from components sourced domestically or from Europe. Our other products come from a variety of sources both domestic and overseas.

Who has to pay sales tax?

Georgia residents will be charged sales tax in addition to the cost of their purchase. Items shipping to addresses outside of Georgia are not subject to sales tax collection. Out-of-state purchasers may, however, be liable for payment of use tax in their home state.

How much does shipping cost?

Domestic Shipping and insurance charges are normally:

        $50 for muskets

$40 for blunderbuss, hand mortar, and short muskets

        $30 for pistols

Do purchasers get any warranties?

Yes. Veteran Arms, LLC extends a limited warranty to all purchases. All items come with a 10 day money-back guarantee. If you are not satisfied with your purchase, simply return it to us in Un-used, Un-modified, and Un-fired condition within 10 days. We will promptly refund your purchase price. Please see our Terms & Conditions section for further details.

Have muskets and pistols been proofed?

What is proofing? According to the folks at the Birmingham Proof House in the UK, proofing is “the firing through the barrel of a considerably heavier load than is customary in the shooting field, thereby setting up pressure and stress on barrel and action much in excess of the pressure generated by standard load...and is intended to, disclose weakness in guns...” But it is more than that. It is certification by a government entity that such testing has been done in accordance with that nation’s recognized standards. Also, not all nations adhere to the same standards and requirements as regards proofing. There is much variation in the loads required by the varying governing bodies - with most calling for a load of 130-140% of the service charge and a specified quantity of shot for the proofing of smoothbores. Also, not all countries require each individual piece to be proofed. In those countries, manufacturers may select a random sampling of their products for proofing. If the samples pass, the entire lot is deemed ‘proofed.’

At present, there are NO proof houses in the United States which proof muzzleloaders. There are likewise NO recognized proofing standards in the US by which a muzzleloader may be proofed. Thus, for example, it would not be possible for an American manufacturer of muzzleloaders to offer a ‘proofed’ weapon unless that weapon was first exported to a country which has a recognized proof house, the piece was proofed and certified there, and then the weapon was re-imported into the United States.

Test Firing: Some muzzleloader manufacturers and importers in the US offer what they call a ‘proof,’ but actually it might best be called a ‘Test Firing.’ As mentioned previously, there are no standards, so each maker test fires to his own standard. During our first two years of operation, we test fired each and every weapon we sold. Since then, we have discontinued the practice of test firing each piece as many people do not wish to wait for the time it takes to be done or would rather do it themselves. (It is very labor intensive.) We will still conduct a test firing on any of our pieces for the fee of $50. To have this done, simply mention it in the comments section at checkout. Note: This may delay the delivery of your piece by up to two weeks.

Are They Safe? Veteran Arms LLC has never had a piece fail either in test firing or in service...ever...period. We have a spotless safety record. With that said, muzzleloaders are not toys. One should always use care and common sense when using any firearm.

Does Veteran Arms, LLC sell outside of the USA?

Yes, Veteran Arms now welcomes international orders for all merchandise. Orders may be submitted online via our online checkout in the normal fashion. Non-weapons orders are typically shipped via post or courier service within a day or two. Orders for blank cartridges are likewise shipped via post within a couple of days. Weapons orders require the completion of a Purchase Order. For more information about placing an international order, please see our International Order Section.

How are muskets shipped?

Muskets and pistols are generally shipped via UPS ground and occasionally via USPS. We can sometimes accommodate speedier delivery at additional cost. Please contact us via e-mail if you have special delivery requirements.

International orders for non-weapons are typically shipped directly to the customer via post or courier. Weapons orders are shipped via air cargo service.

What wood is used in Veteran Arms’ muskets and pistols?

Most of our weapons feature a hardwood stock made from teak, which is very strong and has a pleasant appearance. Each stock is sanded and stained a dark walnut color before having its final finish applied. Some of our other pieces have walnut, maple, or beechwood stocks. As with all wood, coloring will vary slightly between pieces. Below is an example.

Are parts interchangeable?

Yes and No. Each musket is handmade, so minor variances will exist between them. Parts like cones, springs, ramrods, etc are interchangeable. It may not, however, be possible to take a complete lock from one musket and place it into the stock of another without modification.

Will I have to fit the bayonet to the musket?

Veteran Arms, LLC will fit any bayonet ordered with one of our muskets at no charge. However, if you order one of our bayonets separately or for use with a musket from another company, some minor fitting may be required in order to achieve a perfect fit.

Will the musket or pistol need to be defarbed?

No. All modern markings, including serial numbers, are placed inconspicuously beneath the barrel. Depending on the model, locks are left plain or stamped with period markings. In addition, some weapons feature period barrel markings. Just as on originals, some markings may show traces of “shadow” from the hand stamping process. Below is an example:

How long before I receive my order?

Orders for non-weapons - clothing, blanks, accessories, etc - are generally shipped the next day. If we anticipate a longer than usual delay, we will contact you via e-mail or telephone. For detailed information about ordering, please see the Ordering Section of our website. Because all muskets and pistols are finished upon order, weapons orders typically ship within 4 - 12 weeks if the item is in stock. Some items can take slightly longer depending upon availability. Unless otherwise agreed in advance, purchasers agree to the above estimated delivery times. All weapons orders must be paid in full at the time of order. After ordering, customers have two days to cancel the order. No orders will be cancelled or refunds given after two days, as the order may have already gone to prep or been used to make inventory purchasing decisions.

Can I finish my own musket or pistol?

Yes. Customers can request that their musket or pistol be delivered ‘in-the-white’ at no additional charge. Each piece will arrive assembled, tuned, ready to fire except that the stock will not be sanded, stained, or finished. Customers requesting a piece ‘in-the-white’ should be aware that the stock may contain rough spots, blemishes, scratches, etc that must be sanded out / repaired, etc. These are not defects, but are a regular part of stock finishing.

How may I contact Veteran Arms LLC?

We are often in the shop or on the road and cannot answer the telephone. If you have a question, we encourage you to send us an e-mail outlining your specific inquiry. We will answer your message as soon as possible. If you have a specific question which cannot be addressed via e-mail, please feel free to pose the question in your message and leave us your telephone number. We will get back in touch with you. Please do not send generic, “Call Me” messages.

Will Veteran Arms’ blanks work in my Revolver?

Our blanks were specifically designed for use in lever action rifles where overall cartridge length is critical to proper cycling. For that purpose they work excellent. They will also work in some, but not all, single action revolvers. Some reproduction revolvers have tolerances which are too tight to allow the cylinder to rotate freely when using our blanks. If assisted in rotation, the blanks will fire as normal. If you would like to try some of our blanks to see how they work in your particular revolver, send us an e-mail with your address and your revolver’s caliber and we will send you a free sample.

When are items on sale?

We do not conduct sales. Our products are the same great price everyday. We do, occasionally, offer damaged, scratch & dent, or one-of-a-kind items at a substantial savings. These items are typically listed on our Facebook page. Be sure to ‘Like‘ us on Facebook to be notified of the latest offers.

Are any other products in the works?
